HICKEY Family History

The surname Hickey is one of the most ancient Irish surnames (O hIcidhe or O'Caigh "descendent of the healer"), with the clan holding the position of court physicians to the powerful O'Brien royal family of Thomond. This ancient Irish family claims to be descended from Heber, a son of Milesius, King of the Gauls who colonized Ireland many centuries before the Christian era.

    Hickey

My Great Great Grandfather, Nicholas L Hickey, was born in 1870 in Rhode Island. His parents were born in Ireland. His oldest son was named Joseph, suggesting that perhaps Nicholas' father was Joseph Hickey. He married Mary Flynn (1871), who was born in Ireland.

My father's name was John Francis Hickey, Jr. He was a jockey, horse trainer, had a New York radio show playing piano, and fought in WW ll. He met my mother in Germany, and married her. Both are deceased. He got stationed in Augusta, Ga in 1959. We lived here ever since. I'm not sure about ancestors, except most were living in New Jersey. A story my grandfather told me, was that 2 brothers in his ancestry came to the states from Ireland. One became a bar owner, the other became a catholic priest. My father's mother died in child birth when he was 2 years old. My grandfather, John F Hickey, Sr. married Pauline (nee unknown)after that. He was in the navy, then worked and retired from the railroad. My father and mother were the only children in their immediate families. There was never much talk about family history, so I don't have much legacy to pass to my two sons.

My Great Great Grandparents, James and Honora (Taylor) Hickey, died (about 3 months apart) in 1846 in County Clare during the potato famine, leaving five children homeless. David, the oldest, came to America and worked to save money for his siblings to come. John, 13 and Thomas, 6 went to Scotland to tend sheep for $25. I do not know the name of the family that they worked for, nor who took in the two youngest, Catherine, about 2 or 3 and Margaret about 1. They were Catholics and maybe the church helped them, but I cannot find anything about that time before they came to America.

My precious grandmother on my motherโ€™s sideโ€™ mother was named Catherine (not sure if this is correct spelling - there are five following her, including me, many spelled differently) Hickey (Blanchard married name to Franklin Blanchard, Savannah, GA.) She was from somewhere in Ireland. I do not know how they met. She died during the birth of Grandmaโ€™s baby sister. Grandma was born in 1886, Katherine Blanchard (Simmons - June 1906 marriage to Henry Hull Simmons, son of the Honorable T. E. Simmons, American Ambassador to Germany.) I believe Catherine Hickey was from County Cork, Ireland, but not sure. She was buried in Savannah, GA, but I do not remember the location of her burial plot. Would love to hear more on her and her ancestors.

Johanna Hickey, widow from Mallow Co. Cork, in 1825, came to Ontario, Canada with her six children. We believe she is closely associated with the Flaherty family. She came on the Ship Star with the Peter Robinson Settlers and settled on a farm in Ennismore Township in Peterborough Co. Ontario, Canada. Her children were John my ancestor,James, Patrick, Mary, Thomas and Michael. John Hickey married Bridget Hennessey, Dau of another PR Settler, Thomas Hennessey and Ann Carroll. Thomas Hennessey was killed by being kicked by a horse about 1829. Ann then married Patrick Flaherty .

My great great grandfather Richard Hickey came from Ireland to Canada . He was born around 1815-16. It has been said that he was from the county of Cork. But possibly he came from Waterfordor he just left through that port. His wife was Alice Filliter spelling also Filleter,Feliter. She came from Waterford. We dont know if they were married in Ireland or not. Any help with birth records or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
